The unluckiest number of all is the number 14, because it sounds like” yao si” (want to die) in Mandarin and “sut se” (bound to die) in Cantonese.
Some hotels in western cities such as New York and London have no 13th floor because 13 is an unlucky number in the West. I once stayed on the 20th floor of a hotel in Hong Kong that combined East and West—the 4th, 13th and 14th floors were all missing. The so-called 20th floor was actually the 17th floor.

The unluckiest (最不辛 的zuì bù xìng de ) number (数字shù zì) of all is the number 数字14, because 因为it sounds like “yào sǐ要死” (want to die) in Mandarin and “sut se 誓死 ” (bound to die) in Cantonese.
Some hotels 酒店in western (西方sī fāng ) cities (城市chéng shì )such as New York (纽约niǔ yuē)and London (伦敦lún dūn) have no (没有méi yǒu )13th floor (十三楼shí sān lóu) because 因为 “13” 十三 is an unlucky number 数字in the West 西方。I (我wǒ) once stayed (住zhù ) on the 20th floor (第 二 十楼dì èr shí lóu) of a hotel 酒店 in Hong Kong 香港 that combined East (东 方dōng fāng) and West 西方—the 4th, 13th and 14th floors 第 四 楼，第十三楼，(第十四 楼dì shí sì lóu )were all missing. The so-called 所谓 20th floor 第二 十楼 was actually the 17th floor 第十七楼 (dì shí qī lóu).

The word 一 Yi is sometimes pronounced Yao in Mandarin.
Thus the number 14 can be pronounced Yao Si instead of Yi Si. Yao Si means `want to die’.
