Paragraph One

These colors corresponded to the five elements: fire, water, wood, metal, earth and five directions. In old Chinese maps, south was shown at the top and north at the bottom. The fifth direction was the center, where the country of China was placed. China means middle kingdom.

Paragraph One 第 一 段dì yī duàn

These colors corresponded to the five elements (五 性wǔ xìng): fire(火huǒ ) , water (水shuǐ), wood (木mù), metal (金jīng), earth (土tǔ )and five (五wǔ)directions (方向 fāng xiàng).
In old 古 时 Chinese 中 国 maps 地 图, south 南 was shown at the top 上 and north 北 at the bottom 下. The fifth 第五 direction 方向 was the center 中,where the country 国 家 of China was placed. China means middle 中 kingdom 国.
