Kowloon (九龙 jiǔ lonǵ which means Nine Dragons)

九 jiǔ means nine

龙 lonǵ means dragons

Kowloon is how the British colonials spelled the city named (九 jiǔ 龙 lonǵ or Nine Dragons).
The British spelled it this way because 九龙 sounds like Kowloon when pronounced in Cantonese, the local dialect. Although Cantonese sounds entirely different from Mandarin, the writing is identical and has the same meaning. 九龙 means Nine Dragons. Kowloon peninsula is situated across the harbor from the island of Hongkong. It adjoins the mainland of China.
